HCV 2: Globally, nationally or regionally significant large landscape level forests

The forests of HCV 2 category include large forest areas with existing of particular biodiversity (landscape and biotope) level of species, populations and ecosystems which are located on the forest fund’s lands and have significant meaning for landscape conservation globally, nationally or regionally. They may be located within the management units or to contain few these units where viable populations of most if not all species have natural (or similar) distribution and population structure. This HCVF Category also includes forests that contain important sub-populations of very wide-ranging species (e.g. bear, elk, wolf, deer) even though the sub-populations may not in themselves be viable in the long term. It also includes forests where ecological processes and ecosystem functioning (e.g. natural disturbance regime, forest succession, species distribution and abundance) are wholly or relatively unaffected by recent anthropogenic activities. Such forests may be located in the large areas and should be less affected by recent human activities than other forests within the region. The sites where forest ecosystems naturally form a landscape-level mosaic with other vegetation types and where many species use for their existence both forest and non-forest ecosystems,[1] then it may be decided that this value relates to the mosaic of natural vegetation and not just the extent of forest is also refers to a HCV 2 category.

Forest considered under HCV 2 is not necessarily confined to a particular administrative unit (e.g. administrative region, forest management unit or its’ department) because several contiguous administrative units of forest land may together form a significant large landscape level forest. An individual forest management unit can be a HCVF under HCV 2 if it is whole or part of a significant landscape level forest.
